Easy and Practical Apartment Gardening Tips
Most folks who live in apartments have probably decided that it wouldn’t be practical to try to have any type of garden. Many folks become so depressed over not having a garden that they move out of their apartment into a home with a yard. A few houseplants are the compromise that other apartment dwellers make to make them feel less disappointed.
Well, the good word is that you don’t have to move or "settle" for a houseplant or two. Even living in an apartment, it is very possible to have a garden. We’ll give you some great tips and ideas that will get you started.
Container gardening is practically the only kind of gardening that will work when you don’t have a yard or a lot of room. Container gardening isn’t esoteric or complicated. You merely put your plants into several different containers spread around your living space. One thing you should remember to do if you garden in containers, is to label each one, so you will know what’s growing there. Just like with any garden, different plants have different needs. Since it’s important that each plant receives the correct care, you can ensure that by labeling the containers.
Don’t skimp on the size of your containers. Your new plants will need room to grow. Your first reaction, if your apartment is very small, is to choose the smallest containers you can find. Unfortunately, this isn’t the correct step to follow. The correct choice is a pot or container that’s a little larger than the one the plant is in now. This will allow them to take root in their new container and grow and thrive. Containers that are too small cramp the root space of the plants and this causes them to grow weak.
If you are looking objectively at your space and you just do not have any to spare for even the tiniest of containers, look into community gardens in your neighborhood. Ask around and find out how community gardens work in your location. Some of the options are paying a monthly fee for your plot or participating in a time share. Just consider the fact that you can easily have a wonderful outdoors garden – just like you dreamed about – without crowding out your living quarters with plants and all the stuff you need to take care of them. You might think – at first glance – that using your indoors spaces for a garden is the best option, but when your garden starts to take over your living quarters, you may wish you had opted for a community plot.
No matter how small your apartment is, you will be able to find a solution to growing a garden.
The secret is to find someone to help you, if necessary, and to use your imagination. Find sources online, or books at your bookstore, and learn what you can about container garden in a small space. And don’t forget those knowledgeable folks down at your local nursery. They love to help people. All of the information and help you’ll receive will have your garden flourishing before you can say "green thumb."
