Most often people confuse interior designing with interior decorating, there’s a fine thin line between both these professions. A person who’s an interior decorator could be a designer too and vice versa, however, there’s a difference we should know to understand who do we want to become.
Before we learn about the differences in detail, let us understand the core personality characteristics that both these profession demands. So how would you be able to know if you’re a good fit for either of these professions? or even if you would want to pursue it as a side-job and hobby.
You need to carefully observe your preferences and ask yourself, can you change something very obsolete in an absolutely new piece of artwork? Do you like learning more about design, decor, art and such creative topics. If you feel like you have a knack for designing/decorating and you’re interested too then that’s really all you need to get started.
Upgrading our knowledge in whatever field we pursue is the most important factor of success. You might not even be sure of your skills because you’ve not yet dived in to the field. That’s fine, don’t be scared. You can only become a great artist when you know your purpose and most of the times that’s enough to drive you all the way to becoming a best in your own field.
So you’ve figured out you’re interested but not sure if it’s interior designing or decorating. No problem. As a rule of thumb, interior designers deal with the basics to start with, for example they will give shape to ceilings, walls and will cater to every layout aspect of the job. Whereas, a decorator will start to work beyond the layout. He will use the provided layout and overhaul the look and feel of the room.
With increasing competition, professionals prefer to narrow down their niches. For example, an interior decorator may want to deal in only bedroom interior decoration. So now is the right time you should learn more about a specific kind of design/decor that you’re most interested in and specialize in that particular niche. Generally speaking, you will be way more successful by choosing to focus at very specific niche.
You must start reading design magazines. You may also want to attend construction and design expos, all of this can help you to keep improving your skills. There’s a difference between choosing a narrow niche and still learning more about it to be able to adapt to many different design styles. You do not want to be limited to your own personal taste, otherwise it would be monotonous. Coming up with new ideas is the key.
If you’re having a hard time finding a full-time job of an interior designer/decorator then you’re always better off to start freelancing. You can start learning about different ways of presentation and make sure to form a firm impression with your customers. If you’re creative, it won’t take much time for you to get yourself noticed in the industry.

Despite the hardships some dealerships and auto industry titans may be experiencing, employment in the automobile industry as detailers and car washers are still hopping.
Often viewed as a necessary evil by many dealerships, the wash and detail are has become a source of profit and improved CSI (Customer Service Index) by many. This has opened up new opportunities for employment for those with the skills, determination and disciplined to become good and fast.
Auto detailing and car wash jobs have traditionally been lower paying and minimal in career opportunities. The largest perceived demand for these positions have either been with the solo-practitioner or entrepreneur or as part of team at the local car wash. This left many with little forward or upperward career movement and dead-end jobs.
With the increasing popularity of dealerships outsourcing their detailing departments, employment, job diversity and career opportunities have broadened and grown. More specifically, there are companies that specialize in “taking over” the prep, make ready, detailing and wash services of dealerships. This allows the dealership to focus on their core strengths – selling and servicing new, pre-owned and used cars.
The result is that outsourcing companies that provide and staff these services now have a need for detailers and technicians who are trained or can be trained in the art of detailing – namely – buffing, polishing, PDR (paintless dent repair), interior repair, odor removal, headlight restoration, and a host of other reconditioning (Recon) services.
The employment opportunities don’t stop there. As these companies become larger, they require the need of trainers, area operations management, sale people, marketing managers, regional management, accounting and finance and even IT – as many of these firms begin adopting technology for managing their businesses.

Remember, you are not getting a regular salary so your financial security depends on how much you can deliver. Remember that profit depends on expenditure being lower than income. You will almost certainly have some start up costs but keep these as low as you can.

Obtaining the right job is difficult, and you should treat it as a full-time occupation in itself. Not every available job is the right job for you, so before applying willy-nilly for every job in sight, start by taking a hard look at your own needs, objectives and personal qualities. Know which jobs fit the career you are seeking, and which offer room to grow and offer the pay and benefits you desire.
To know if a position is right for you, it is necessary to do some homework. And speaking of homework, going back to school can be a good move. A recent survey shows that people with post-graduate degrees (above a bachelor’s degree) typically earn 35 to 50 percent higher salaries than those with bachelor’s degrees. But if you decide to go straight into the workforce, make sure you are choosing wisely between whatever job offers you may have.
Your personal qualities and areas of interest can offer a key to understanding what sort of position you would be happy in from day to day. What sort of people do you enjoy being around? Extroverted and gregarious types, or shy and silent? Do you want to be surrounded by people who are happy being given instructions, or who prefer to tell you what you should do?
What about social activities? Do you want to spend time with your co-workers outside of work, or would you prefer to leave your colleagues behind when you go home at night? Company size and profile is important as well. Is the company small or large? Is it geographically focused, national or international in its focus?
Using online job boards you can begin to narrow down the available options and focus your job search on companies that are likely to fit the profile that you are looking for. But there are other methods as well.
By far the most common and most effective approach to getting a job is directly applying for one. About two-thirds of job hunters do this, and nearly half eventually have success with that approach. Other methods that are fairly effective (more than 20% successful) include referrals from a friend’s workplace, job postings in newspapers, using career centers or school organizations and clubs and cooperative programs.
While your personality and goals will determine which job is right for you, it is your professional (and personal) abilities and liabilities that will determine your performance. And the progress you make in your career will determine the satisfaction you derive from your job.
Remember, finding the right job is a full-time job in itself. You need to spend time and energy in oder to get the best outcome. But keep in mind that however you perform in your career, it is best to find a niche where you can fit in and find personal satisfaction.

Headhunters – What Do They Do?

Are you spending way too much time away from your family? Do you crave a flexible schedule? Like many of us, you may be looking for a way to do your work from home. For some, the commute to and from work has simply become too expensive, others are burned out by their current jobs.

Whatever the reason, the need for home based work has skyrocketed in recent years. While this is a great way to bring in steady income, many people are still wondering if these jobs are legitimate, or where they should even start.

Luckily, you CAN make a great living by working at home, and there are countless companies just waiting to employ you. Given your time and dedication to the job, the earning potential is totally limitless, and one can even equal their current wages, if not surpass them completely. One of the best opportunities to achieve this is by doing surveys online. Once you have decided to take the leap into home based business, fear not, as this type of work requires no initial investment from you. If you think about it, every product you come in contact with was marketed to you. Companies use your opinions of their products as a way to build their marketing plans, and therefore, are more than happy to compensate you for providing that opinion.

However, beware of companies that want to charge you membership fees in exchange for access to a database of survey websites. You should never have to pay a company to be able to work for them.

This person is a recruiter whose specialty is matching corporate clients with professionals who are highly skilled. A headhunter may work through an organization where every agent, or headhunter, specializes in a particular area of jobs and maybe even geographic areas. They can also be an independent contractor. A corporation can benefit using headhunting services in two different ways.
• It will eliminate the need for the company to place an want ad for an open position
• Addresses the listing of job seekers, most who will be unqualified for the open position for different reason
Being a headhunter, you would be looking for good candidates for the open position and providing the initial screening that will save the corporation time doing it themselves. For a headhunters services the company will pay them if they find the right applicant for the job. Typically, the fee is a percentage of the yearly initial salary of the employee who filled the open position. With this type of payment arrangements, it encourages a headhunter to build tight lasting associations with corporate company. The more successful a person is at filling these open positions the more likely the corporate company will seek them out for other job opening opportunities. From this type of association, both parties and the one that is seeking employment will benefit.
Fifty percent of their job is working for those people who are seeking employment and the other fifty percent is working for the corporate company that hired them. Anyone can contact the headhunting service who is looking job openings matching their skills. Usually they will submit a resume and then required to have an interview in person or over the phone. During the verbal interview, the headhunter will be able to get a sense for the needs, skills, and personality of the job seeker. This may include things like their willingness to work extended hours, to travel, or to relocate.
In some instances, the job seeker, when hired, will pay the headhunter’s fee instead of the corporate company. Before you choose to work with a headhunting service to find jobs clarify who is going to pay for their services so there will be no surprises. A headhunter can give the job seeker a list of employment opportunities that they may have missed if they had not utilized their services. By using a headhunting service and having the verbal interview the headhunter can let the corporate company know if they think the applicant would fit the job opening. In addition, when having the initial interview with a prospective employer it is not a “cold interview” because the employer already knows about the job seeker and knows that they would be a good match for the open position.

Retiree Employment – Why?

Not all small businesses are enforced equally by OSHA. There are certain industries were OSHA knows they will find problems, fraud, unfinished paperwork, improper employee notifications, poor training, and thus, collect fines, fees, or even arrests for misconduct or violation of its laws, rules, and regulations. When it comes to employment law and OSHA-standards one of the most enforced industries is the building sector.

This is why those in the construction sector need to be in full compliance, and have their managers and project managers go through training. There are many online education programs that can be completed for a very low cost and get the company up to speed. Often a small construction company will end up with a big contract and then it will have to hire employees and grow the business. Each time it hires more employees it has more of a risk of a surprise visit from OSHA, or breaking one of its rules.

The OSHA-standards and rules are something like 56 stories high if you stack each page on top of each other. The entire set of rules and regulations comes on five CD-ROMs and there probably isn't a lawyer alive who knows all the rules for all of the industries. This is why you take an online study course, you need to make sure that it is industry-specific. Unfortunately, for the building and construction-industry sector is very encompassing.

There are rules for roofers, plumbers, electricians, bricklayers, pipefitters, drywallers, and you name it. Many of the laws and rules for proper equipment and safety on the job site are somewhat different. Luckily, there are many companies who have put this all together, and made it easy for you to figure out and comply. I would suggest that you take advantage of these programs and keep yourself out of hot water. Please consider this.

If a person is retired, why would they want employment? Well many factors need to be considered.
Firstly a retiree may be facing a drastically reduced income, but expenditure may be on the increase. Retirees home based bills like heating and lighting may go up because they are at home all day. That combined with the rise in the cost of living and any possible reduction in investment income may force a retiree to consider going back to employment.
For a retiree employment might be a good option if they want to keep their skills up to date, to keep up with technology. Simply because there are people at work that they have professional relationships with may mean for a retiree employment is important for social reasons.
Retiree employment may provide new skills for a retiree which can help keep the mental agility of younger years. However, if your employer wants you to retire and cannot offer you any more hours, even part time, then you will face the idea of a new job. Jobs that are pretty hard to find these days.
One option is to consider self employment as opposed to retiree employment. There are many benefits.
You can still earn an income, and learn new skills. You can make friends on the many forums there are for workers at home. You can keep up to date with technology and work the hours you choose, and retire when you are ready and not a day before. There are so many benefits to being your own boss.
So how are you actually going to get some work at home? While there are many products out there to help, there are also many scams. How do you know which is which?
Some are good honest sites that give great information. Unfortunately also there are many scams out there too! So how do you avoid the scams that want to rip you off?
In order to find out which are which, it is always a good idea to see what people are saying about any product you come across. If you put the name of the product into your search engine, and have a read about what people say about it. Forums are particularly good for this.

Employment Background Check Procedures

Every Interview has Communication Questions

Communication skills is an essential competence required in almost all jobs today, and you'll almost certainly be asked communication questions in an interview.  In an interview you'll need to be able to demonstrate that you have the experience to communicate clearly whether you're speaking or writing, and in more senior positions it's essential to show that you can interact and influence others.  A common job interview mistake is to think that how you communicate in the interview itself will be enough to demonstrate your ability to communicate. It isn't!

How to answer Communication Questions: Three Steps to Follow

There are three steps to follow which will help you be better prepared to answer communication interview questions:

STAR - For Answering Competence Based Questions

The STAR system is a highly recommended as a way of responding to structured interview questions common in competency based interviews.

Ten Interview Questions Testing Your Communication Competence

All the questions below are testing your ability to communicate effectively, listen sensitively, adapt the style and content of your communication to different audiences, and foster effective communication with others.

Finding the right people to work for you has never been an easy task. Everyone is good at something but you have to determine if they are likely to be good at doing what you want them to do. Not only that, you must also make sure that they are going to fit in with your organization and current staff. This is why having good employment background check procedures is essential whenever you are hiring new workers.
It might come as a surprise that the relatively simple process of checking the background and references for a prospective employee is often done poorly or not at all. Checking someone’s background can tell you a lot about someone and confirm that they are telling you the truth. Yes people do lie on application forms for all sorts of reasons and the problem is on the increase.
To avoid future legal problems you should make sure that your candidate has signed a comprehensive waiver allowing you to obtain any private information that you may require. It is best to use a statement prepared by a legal expert for this purpose but it is standard procedure so it should not be a problem.
It is very common to confuse employee reference checking with employment background checking but they are in fact, very different. Reference checking is the process of actually talking to people, ideally 3 people, who have had a business relationship with the candidate in the past 7 years.
Checking someone’s background is more to do with checking that they are who they say they are, verifying all certificates and licenses and searching for any criminal records or arrest warrant and other information that they may have conveniently forgotten to tell you.
Here are some of the more important checks for your background procedure.
Check with state or county court records in all the places that they have lived or worked in the past few years. This might uncover criminal records or arrest warrants etc. You should also check in states and counties adjacent to where they lived or worked also.
If the job might involve driving of any kind then you must see the drivers license and verify that it is valid with the issuing authority.
Credit checks should be done where appropriate but unless the job involves handling or controlling money in some way then such checks will usually be of little value. How an employee handles their own money may have little or no influence on how they perform their job.
You should check that all relevant certificates and licenses are valid. It is amazing how often this crucial step is ignored even when it involves doctors and lawyers and other professionals whose credentials should not be taken for granted. All it takes is a quick call to the issuing authority.
Sometimes I think that everyone except me lies about their academic achievements on their resume. They do it and get away with it because employers don’t include it in their employment background check procedures and if they do then it usually gets ignored. You should at least check that the qualification claimed was in fact obtained by calling the issuing body ask asking for verification.
Before you start phoning around or commissioning an employee screening services you should first check them out online. Why? Not because it will give you all the answers but because it is quick and easy and could confirm at least some of the information that you have been given. It might also highlight areas where you need to challenge the candidate or seek further validation.

Does Your Website Look Incomplete?

Unfortunately, the recent economic crisis has affected countries all over the world, including Australia. Australia has faced large cutbacks in the past months, leaving many people jobless. Almost two thousand jobs were lost between April and May, and there have been more than 8,000 job cuts already since this year began. Some of the recent cutbacks have included the clothing manufacturer Pacific Brands firing 1,850, and Hans Continental Smallgoods meat processing plant cutting 400 jobs. When BHP closed one mine and reduced production at another, 1750 workers lost their jobs. The BHP mining company also announced that there would be more cutbacks to come. All parts of the economy have been affected, and there have been major cuts in the banking, aviation, and mining sectors.

Although Australia has a relatively stable economy compared to many other countries, job seekers will find it much harder to find a job than it would have been just a year or two ago. Unemployment rates have steadily increased in Australia, just when they had started to come down. Australia struggled with unemployment higher than 7% from the 1970's to the early 21st century. The country had gotten its unemployment rate below 6% by 2003. By 2006, Australia's unemployment rate dropped to 4.9%, the lowest it had been in more than 30 years. The rates went down even lower, but they did not stay that way. Between May 2008 and May 2009, the unemployment rate increased from 4.2% to 5.7%.

With Australia's recent economic problems, people have started looking for the easiest way to get a new job. It seems that the traditional way of using a job recruitment agency is outdated and inefficient according to actual job hunters who have compared it to using other internet services. The most common way for people to get jobs today is to use online classified job postings. There are a number of popular sites that people can subscribe to and then wait for the job postings that match their description to be emailed to them. This saves the time of searching through dozens of posting for ads to find the ones that suit particular skills. It is a long way from the outdated technique of searching through the classified section of newspapers.

Job hunters have also begun to use other tools, including social bookmarking sites such as Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn to find contacts and search for job openings. There are also a number of websites for freelancers. If you are waiting to find a job, then you might want to consider doing some freelance work until you can find a company that you can work for long-term. One advantage of freelancing is that you can widen your search and choose from jobs all over the world. You might even want to continue freelancing after you land a new job as an additional source of income. Because it is easier and cheaper to use online sites, many job seekers are going that route.

Searching for a job in this kind of market is far from an ideal situation. Skilled job vacancies are decreasing, and many businesses are hesitant about expanding. Despite these problems, you should not give up. It will be harder to find a job, so you will have to be more inventive. You should build a list of people to network with, including friends, family, acquaintances, and former co-workers in this networking file. Many people are taking advantage of online job search sites and other internet sites. Explore all options on the internet. There are a variety of resources at your fingertips if you know how to find them.

Another recent trend in Australia has been a change from full-time to part-time jobs. Since November of 2008, approximately 35,300 full-time jobs have been lost and replaced with 38,400 part-time jobs. Although there are technically more jobs, the equivalent of more than 16,000 full-time jobs have been lost. Obviously, this means that many households are finding themselves required to watch their spending in order to make ends meet. Freelancing can supplement your income if you find yourself reduced to part-time employment. If you are searching for work, you might have to settle for a part-time job until you can find better employment.

Your chance of finding employment also depends on what field you are looking to work in. There are still many jobs available for teachers and medical professionals because regardless of the economy there will be a demand in these sectors. The Australian government is also putting money into infrastructure in order to create more jobs, so there will be a demand for people working on roads and railroads. Both the marketing and advertising sectors have also been doing relatively well.

If you are choosing what field of study you want to embark on have decided to return to school for training, taking burgeoning sectors into account is a good idea. The job market is in worse condition than it has been in a while, so if you want a good job, look at careers that have potential and plenty of job openings. Producing environmentally friendly energy has become more important to individuals and governments alike. You may want to consider the Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) field or uranium mining. The accounting and legal professions are also fields that promise plenty of jobs. If none of these fields interest you, then you should consider working for a small business or open your own.

You may want to consider taking a course or getting training in a different field if you cannot get a job with your skills. This is a major investment, so do not switch careers unless you have exhausted all options in your own sector, or you have decided that you want a different career move. Whether or not you are in one of these fields or considering one of these careers, you want to know what the future looks like for your country.

Many people are wondering what the prospects for the future are. The economic problems facing Australia, and most of the world, did not occur overnight, so they will not be fixed overnight either. Many experts believe that the job crisis will get worse before it improves. They expect unemployment to rise to at least 7%. This is because despite thousands of lost jobs, businesses are still in the early stages of cutbacks.

In order to stay in business and weather the current economic problems, companies are cutting costs wherever they can, and that includes jobs. Cutting jobs is one of the easiest ways for corporations to cut business spending, which is necessary for businesses to survive economic hardship. Unfortunately, very few businesses will try to expand in a precarious economy, which means that there will be fewer jobs replacing the ones lost. Australia is not the only country to suffer massive cutbacks; in fact, many other countries have been hit much harder. The global economy as a whole is reaching its lowest point since the Great Depression in the 1930's.

Online job search websites can help in a number of ways. First of all they are usually cheaper than a job agency. They are also working for you 24 hours a day. You can wake up every morning to find a selection of ads in your mailbox to check out. This will save you time and allow you to start following up on these leads immediately. An online job search site will also let you find jobs from a wider range of locations. You can search for employment throughout all of Australia, and with many internet jobs available, you might even be able to work from home. The newest technology is being used to find jobs in the changing market. Do not miss out and get left behind.

The next couple of years will be rough, but there is no reason to lose hope yet. The government and financial experts expect unemployment to rise, but they are taking action. Australia's government has dedicated itself to creating jobs for its citizens, including infrastructure jobs. The government has already spent $42 billion (28 billion USD) to bolster the economy and will continue to take steps to protect its citizens. Australia managed to drop its unemployment rates from about 6% to 4.2% in only five years. Australians will have to weather the storm, but with hard work and smart choices, Australia's economy will get back on track and the country will once again be blessed with a thriving job market.

Websites are living communications channels that change and evolve along with the companies and organizations for which they serve as an online presence. But there’s a difference between websites that are in a perpetual state of change and sites that appear to be incomplete.
In fact, your website should be in a perpetual state of change. One of the biggest advantages of online channels such as websites and social media is that you have the ability to update them constantly. As your business adds new products or services, or as your customers’ needs change, or as the surrounding world creates new opportunities and information, you should adapt your messages to make the most of the change.
Having a site that’s incomplete sends an inherent message that you’re not able to keep up with change, or that you’re struggling to provide information that customers want to see. Neither of those creates the impression you want to convey.
It might help to stop thinking of your website as an electronic tool, and start considering it as another physical location of your company or organization. When clients, prospects, or other curious types visit your website, it’s as if they’re walking through your offices. Each page is like a different department — some have the flash and energy of your marketing or sales team, while others have a more down-to-business flavor, like your accounting department.
When you have unfinished pages, it’s as if the visitor wandered into your offices during a major renovation. Where the engineering department is supposed to be, she sees unpainted drywall, ladders, and cables running every which way. The executive suite will look regal when it’s complete, but right now, it’s a dusty, noisy mess. Accounts Payable is doing its best with everyone crammed into a quarter of the normal space and surrounded by boxes full of files.
You probably wouldn’t allow an important prospect to tour your facility when it looked like that, because you’d be concerned about putting your best foot forward. If that’s the case, you shouldn’t allow that same prospect to visit your website if substantial parts of it are missing. After all, it means you’re not putting your best foot forward.
What often happens is that a company begins with an ambitious plan for its new website. The development team creates the basic architecture and designates the individual pages that will make up each section. The next task is populating those pages with copy, images, or other items. Unfortunately, the people assigned to that task already have full plates, so the extra job of preparing material for the website falls to the bottom of the to-do list. Or, the others in the company who need to supply that information don’t regard it as a high priority.
The result is pages that end up saying nothing except “Coming soon,” or that feature cute little clip-art drawings of highway barricades accompanied by messages like “page under construction.” Neither of those “solutions” to missing content is a good idea. Your navigation promised visitors that the page existed, and you’ve just let them down.
Other common signs of incompletion are copy that references information that will follow when the information isn’t there, or content that includes a long-ago date — such as “Our 2013 product line” when my calendar suggests we’re currently in 2017.
Does that mean you should delay the launch of your new website until every single bit of information is in place, every
has been dotted and every
has been crossed? Not at all. Instead of posting those “coming soon” or “under construction” pages, leave the pages off your navigation. Don’t make them visible to visitors. They won’t notice their absence, because they have no way of realizing that you plan to include them. As your team completes work on each of those pages, your IT team or web developer can bring them to life. Your site will grow more complete as each is added. Meanwhile, you’re not disappointing site users by dangling directions to content that doesn’t exist.
Keep what’s incomplete out of sight, and customers and prospects will never know that you’ve missed your deadline or failed to devote the time needed to fill in all the blanks. Instead of calling attention to things that make it appear that you don’t have your act together, you’ll be able to present an impression of confidence and authority.

Writing Your Resume – Helpful Dos and Don’ts For Job Search Success

Times are tough. A month or two of unemployment can drag on to six or eight months pretty easily. And it's only going to get worse since the jobs picture lags the state of the economy.

If you're out of work, you may be getting anxious. Your unemployment may be running out, you're wondering about health insurance - and with each passing day, the pool of competitors continues to grow.

Your anxiety is understandable.

That said, avoid allowing your apprehension and your zeal to land something to push you over the line. The "candidate as stalker" syndrome won't generate results. (Actually, on second thought, it might generate a result...but definitely not the one you want.)

This is the person who calls the recruiter every week without fail. "Just checking in," he says. The recruiter has indicated the firm has no jobs that are a match for this candidate right now...but no matter! What if they forget about him? He's not going to chance it! (Hey...he's got this recruiter's home number. Forget the office; maybe he'll start calling there...)

This is the person who interviews for a job and starts with the follow-up calls the next day - and phones every day after that.

Pestering people is not the way to get results. You may be trying to demonstrate that you're enthusiastic or sincere, but believe me - this is not the message you are sending. You're showing that person on the other end of the phone that you have exceptionally poor judgment or that you are desperate - and you can count on the fact that it will reflect poorly on you.

Are you looking for a job? If this is the first time that you have been job seeking in years, you might need to write a resume. If this is also something you haven’t done in years, here are a few helpful dos and don’ts.
DO write what you need to write and then be done. For years, we were always told to keep our resumes limited to one page. This is a good rule to follow, but sometimes one page isn’t enough. You don’t want to eliminate some job skills or important training just to get everything to fit onto one page. If you need more than one page, use it.
DON’T make your resume hard to read. There are a number of aspects that you want to keep in mind when doing this. For starters, the format must be reader-friendly. A modern and “cool” format is neat and eye-catching, but it becomes a major pain if it is difficult to read. Long sentences and paragraphs also often make a resume un-friendly to the read. Many job seekers find success using bullet points.
DO place extra focus on the skills or job responsibilities that are transferable. This means you want to focus on or highlight any responsibilities from former jobs that can benefit you for the position in which you are applying for now. Don’t omit other responsibilities, but be sure to emphasize on the transferable ones because they do so that you are a qualified job candidate.
DON’T list personal references on your resume. In fact, you might not need to list any references at all. A lot of job seekers like to do the whole “references available upon request.” This is fine, but make sure those references you do include are business related ones.
DO have a good flow. As you know, there are many ways that you can compile a resume. You can go the functional route and have all related jobs at the top of the list. Or, you can go the chronological route and start with your most recent jobs and then work your way down. Either approach will work, but the key is to keep a flow. Pick one format or the other and stick with it.
DON’T use fluff or fillers. If you didn’t already know, this includes putting relevant things on your resume. What qualifies as irrelevant? Volunteer work from 20 years ago, high school activities from 20 years ago, hobbies you “sometimes” enjoy, and so forth.

Tips On How to Work With An Agency In Your Job Search

Graduating from college is the best thing that probably happened to you. I know that you are excited and you are ready to look for that ground breaking opportunity. Before you get too excited, let's take a look at what you need to do in order to land great job.

The first thing that you will need to do is build a network. I know that you are looking forward to graduating or you have already graduated from college, therefore, you will want to get hooked up with people who will give you the best opportunity to land a job. Networking with professionals is like branding. The more they see your face and hear your voice, the more likely they will be able to refer you to the right places to land the job of your dreams.

You will also want to get linked up with internships that specialize in your field. If you are going to have the best chance for finding that great job, you will want to make sure that you have some type of experience in the industry. This usually means that you can use the internship program that you were apart of to use as a form of experience.

Make sure that you are well rounded when you are looking for somewhere to work. If you are going to work for a company, then you will want to make sure that you are looking at filling a void as opposed to filling a position. Filling a position could limit you to placing a cap on the corporate ceiling because you are focusing too much on the position. However, if you are focusing on filing the needs of the company, you can find yourself moving up the ranks faster because you are showing that you are well rounded with your skills.

Recently I attended a networking event where I knew there would be several people looking for work. When it was my turn to introduce myself, I did so as a ‘Professional in the Staffing Industry.’ Immediately I caught the attention of several people in the room. I could see their eyes light up with hope.
After the meeting concluded, one particular man approached me, and without any introduction said, “Those [expletive] recruiters never call me back!” Somewhat startled, I made it a point to dig deeper. He was clearly angry with whatever experience he must have had, and I wanted to find out more. “Sir,” I said, “Why do you think that is?”
“You know, those [expletive] recruiters don’t care about anyone but themselves,” he continued on a profanity-laced tirade. Not only did he have a bad attitude, but most of all he was unable to recognize that working with a recruiter is not as simple as sending in a resume and going to church on Sunday.
Regardless if you like recruiters, staffing agencies, headhunters, or whatever you want to call the people who work in the industry, the fact remains that agencies are a reality in today’s job market. You are not required to use an agency at all if you don’t wish, but if you decide to work with a recruiter or a staffing agency, be aware of the rules of the game.
Rule No. 1: Recruiters are people too! When you engage with a recruiter, be respectful. Recognize they are doing a very stressful job in a very competitive landscape, with very low margins and extreme pressure to deliver every day. Recruiters work their butts off to help YOU find a job. It is mind boggling to hear stories of candidates that yell at their recruiter, but it happens every day. I am sure you have heard the cliche; you attract more flies with honey – that holds true here too.
Rule No. 2: Not all agencies are the same. When you assess various agencies, keep in mind different agencies offer an assortment of benefits. Some offer free training and education. Some offer medical and other health related benefits. Some have personalized support for their contractors. Some have referral bonus plans and other incentives. But most importantly, different agencies service different types of clients. If you are looking to work with a small boutique company, then find a recruiter that works with small boutique clients. If you are looking to work for a Fortune 1000 company, then find a recruiter that focuses their efforts on that market.
Rule No. 3: Information changes in real time. Understand that today there may not be a position that fits your profile, but tomorrow there may be several opportunities. You must manage the relationship with your recruiter by communicating on a regular basis and making sure your recruiter is working for you. Do not get discouraged if weeks or months go by with no openings. Many people make the mistake of losing contact too early in the relationship building process and lose out on opportunities because of it. I hear recruiters all the time tossing around the names of the people they are in close contact with that might fit a position. You must maintain constant communication.
Rule No. 4: Keep a log. When you are working with a recruiter, it is important to know which positions you are being considered for and submitted against. In most cases, people have more than one recruiter working to help them find a job. In this case, you have to communicate to each recruiter the positions you are interested in and the ones you have been submitted to. If you don’t, you run the risk of being submitted to the same position by more than one agency. Not a good thing. If this happens, you may burn the bridge with each recruiter and could be disqualified for that position automatically. If you are applying for positions on your own, you must keep a log and communicate these to your recruiters too.
Rule No. 5: Too many recruiters are too many. At the most you should have three agencies working for you. If you only have one, then you limit your odds of finding the best opportunity. If you have more than three, you face the pitfall of being over represented in the market. Find two or three recruiters that you get along with personally, that you believe has your best interest at heart, and that maintains an open dialog with you.
As you can see, working with an agency or a recruiter is not that tough. Use your common sense. Treat your recruiter as your potential employer. Recruiters have a wealth of knowledge, and have deep connections in the hiring community. I believe the man that I met had a bad experience because he did not follow any of the rules. He had a very bad attitude and he was totally unprepared for the process management required to effectively work with a recruiter. Remember, when you are looking for a job, you have to make finding a job your job. You must be the manager of your own career.
Best of luck in your job search.
